Watch Your Step: Slips, Trips, and Falls

This June, we are focusing on one of the most common causes of injury in our community: Slips, Trips, and Falls.

Whether at home, on the job, or walking through downtown Farmersville, a sudden fall can lead to serious injury. The good news is that most falls are preventable with a few simple changes to our environment and habits.

🏠 Make Your Home a "No-Fall" Zone

Most falls happen in the places we feel safest. Take a walk through your home this week and check for these common hazards:

  • Clear the Path: Keep hallways and stairs free of clutter, shoes, and boxes. Ensure furniture is arranged to provide wide, clear walkways.
  • Check Your Lighting: Replace burnt-out bulbs and add nightlights in hallways and bathrooms. Being able to see where you’re stepping is half the battle.
  • Secure Rugs: Throw rugs are a major trip hazard. Use double-sided tape to secure them or, better yet, remove them entirely from high-traffic areas.
  • Bathroom Safety: Consider installing grab bars in the shower and next to the toilet. Use non-slip mats both inside and outside the tub.

🛠️ Work and Public Safety

  • Spills: Clean up liquid, grease, or food spills immediately. If you see a spill in a public place or store, notify a staff member right away.
  • Cords and Cables: Ensure extension cords are never run across walkways.
  • Step Stools: Never use a chair or a box to reach high items. Always use a sturdy step stool with a handrail.

👟 Personal Safety Tips

  • Proper Footwear: Wear shoes with non-skid soles. Avoid walking in socks or smooth-bottomed slippers on wood or tile floors.
  • Take Your Time: Many falls happen when we are rushing. Slow down, especially when transitioning from different floor surfaces or navigating stairs.
  • Focus: Avoid "distracted walking." Keep your eyes on your path rather than your phone screen.
