History of the Department

The history of the Farmersville Fire Department is a testament to the resilience and dedication of our community in the face of adversity. Following two significant fires that devastated parts of the downtown square in 1888 and 1890, it became clear that a more organized approach to fire protection was necessary. In 1904, the Farmersville Volunteer Fire Department was established, under the leadership of Chief Jerry Worden.

The department's first fire apparatus, Farmersville Hook & Ladder No. 1, was a four-wheel cart adorned with bright red ladders hung on the side. This marked the beginning of a new era of firefighting for the city. At that time, bucket brigades were the primary means of extinguishing fires, utilizing water drawn from cisterns to combat blazes.

Over the next 17 years, Farmersville faced two more devastating fires, underscoring the need for a reliable fire response system. To alert the community of fires, the whistle at the Farmersville Mill and Light Co would sound a fire alarm, followed by a series of long blasts—1, 2, 3, or 4—to indicate which ward was affected.

As the years passed, the fire apparatus gradually upgraded. Chief John Rike, the second Fire Chief, along with local blacksmiths, played a crucial role in refurbishing “used” apparatus to better serve the community. Additionally, fundraising efforts helped secure the necessary funds for new equipment and resources.

The Farmersville Fire Department’s history is deeply rooted in the community’s commitment to safety and service. Throughout the years, there has been a strong calling from dedicated members of the community who have volunteered their time and efforts to protect our beloved city of Farmersville.

Since its establishment in 1904, 23 Chiefs have selflessly served the city, each contributing to the growth and development of the Fire Department. Their leadership and vision have shaped the department into the respected, ISO 2 rated organization it is today, known for its high standards of service and operational excellence.

As the needs of the community have evolved, so too has the Farmersville Fire Department. Today, we proudly operate a diverse fleet that includes 4 large apparatuses: a Tower, a Quint, an Engine, and a Tender. In addition, we have 2 brush trucks and 3 quick response vehicles, ensuring we are prepared to handle a wide range of emergencies.

Today, the Farmersville Fire Department stands as a proud symbol of our community's commitment to safety and service, continuing a legacy that has flourished for over a century. We honor our past as we look forward to serving the community with the same dedication and courage that has defined us since our inception.
